2002-2006 Accomplishments
Thanks to the mentorship of the Palmer Foundation and the diligent
efforts of our Board of Directors, we are now an officially independent
land trust recognized by the State of Colorado. Thanks
to the Palmer Foundation! In this short time, LTUA has made leaps
toward meeting the need for conservation in the Upper Arkansas
Valley. Here is a short list of accomplishments:
- Completion of the 400-acre Game Trail Conservation Easement
(GTE), an important elk winter range northwest of Buena Vista,
plus funding for an endowment.
- Completion of a two year Great Outdoors Colorado Capacity
Building Grant and funding from the Chaffee County Board of
Commissioners to help establish LTUA.
- Conclusion of phase I of the Game Trail Corridor Project,
in 2003, with over 300 acres of private land placed in conservation
easements.
- Commencement of phase II of the Game Trail Corridor Project,
2004, which is a unique, collaborative effort to protect more
prime elk wintering grounds in north Chaffee County.
- Completion of a Land Resource Inventory Map for LTUA and
Chaffee County, 2004.
- A 2002 Land Trust Alliance and Turner Foundation Matching
Grant for Board training and development in the areas of fundraising,
governance, and attendance of the 2003 Land Trust Alliance
Southwest Conference.
- Successful execution of LTUA first major fundraising event,
the Black Tie Benefit Ball in April, 2003. Thanks to the support
of over 150 attendees, as well as generous donations of silent
auction items, food, and help from local businesses and individuals,
LTUA raised over $4,000 through this event.
